Balmuto Castle (featured image)

Balmuto Castle, in Fife, was first built as a tower in the 1400s. The Boswells obtained parts of the lands at Balmuto via marriage with the Glen family in the first half of the 15th century. This was confirmed by James II in either 1439 or 1440.

The castle had many additions and renovations over the centuries, turning into a mansion house. After a period of being in a state of partial ruin throughout much of the 20th century, American Harry Boswell bought Balmuto in the 1960s, and oversaw its restoration between 1974 and 1984, and it is now a private residence.
