The Buchan is both a district and a family tartan. It is possibly one of the oldest named sett although had been a district tartan for the Glenorchy area. This is also known as the hunting Cumming tartan. The Buchan family adopted it as their own in 1965 due to the family connection with the Cumming going back to 1210 when the daughter of King Edgar, Margaret, who by her first marriage was Countess of Buchan, married William Coymen, sheriff of Forfar.
The term ‘ancient’ refers to the dyes shades, which are usually lighter, whereas 'modern' refers to darker dye shades.
